9. But let us recall the slow moving, undramatic environment in which they have occurred. [The very lack of drama in these changes indicates the genius of the Self-Survey idea. --The protective coloring of the environment -- those who belong in that environment carry them ???? according to social mores.] What is more, these surface changes are merely outward symptoms of a more profound transition in the social psychology of our town, for we have moved from dead center to a dynamic climate of change. Many more changes are in the making. I think of these symptoms as I do a measles rash. In themselves they are not very important, but they indicate that something is happening to the total organism. This is true of the body politic in our community. And, like the measles, this too seems to be infectious. For example, Cedar Rapids, a city 100 miles away and twice our size, is launching its Self-Survey in January. And at hearings on a FECP proposal before the State Legislature this year our Self-Survey results figured as important evidence that an answer must be found to this problem for Iowa. It resulted in the appointment of a Governor's Committee to study the issue and recommend appropriate legislation for the next session. We're trying hard you see to develop epidemic proportions. But perhaps our accomplishments have significance as they stand. If Emerson was right when he said, "The end preexists in the means", then our future is hopeful, for we are in process. The process itself is good. I've finished my story, but I can't sit down without pointing out that this project would never have been undertaken
