Movie theaters are now unsegregated, ad are bowling alleys. The Municipal swimming pool dropped segregation this year, and attendance broke all records. In local industry, a Negro advanced to foreman (the first) ... and now there are Negro office workers in Burlington, sales clerks and a Negro teacher in public schools. The minority is gaining new self confidence. A chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, recently formed, is now very active, being particularly effective in keeping Negro children from dropping our of school. Negroes are taking part in community activities.. joining the American Legion the Council of Church Women, the League of Women Voters. Best of all, is the change in climate in Burlington, the promise of greater, ever growing improvement Cedar Rapids, a neighboring city twice the size is launching its own self survey. An FEPC hearing in the state legislature publicized Burlington and resulted in the appointment of a Governor' Committee to survey the state. Burlington has made a real impact on human relations in Iowa... a mission had indeed accomplished much... not only in Iowa but in the nation as we will see by the example of Baltimore. In Burlington much credit is given to the staff of the Race Relations Department of the American Missionary Association supported by you through your Board of Home Missions. And the work progresses, as it has for ten years. Mission Undertaken in Baltimore, Maryland A team of race relations workers of the AMA composed of a social psychologist, a minister and an economist has just helped launch a pioneer self survey in the unprecedented and unexpected locale of a North South border city, sixth largest in the U.S ... Baltimore. A thousand citizens, under sponsorship of the Governor of the state, will study 7,000 agencies and individuals. There are 68 organizational sponsors. The facts compiled in this religiously motivated program in race relations will lead to a comprehensive program for action. Can Baltimore's segregation and discrimination be rooted out? We are presently seeking an answer.
