RUST, IOWA & LEMOYNE OLD CAPITOL • IOWA CITY, IOWA EDUCATIONAL EXPANDING HORIZONS May 6, 1966 Finance Committee Paul Neuhauser, Chairman Allan Arneson Mrs. Willard Boyd Donald Byrant Charles Davidson Mrs. Richard Feddersen Reverend E. H. Hancock Thomas Hanson William Meardon Ralph Miller George Nagle, Jr. Russell Ross Charles Whipple Dear Colleague: Once again it is necessary to call upon you for financial support for one of the most important and exciting undertakings in the University. This summer, under the auspices of RILEEH (Rust, Iowa and LeMoyne for Expanding Educational Horizons), a number of Negro students from Rust College, in Mississippi, will be brought to this campus in an attempt to remedy their educational deficiencies. As we done last summer, a special program providing remedial work in English and Mathematics has been devised. Since Rust students have spent their entire lives in segregated but unequal schools, they enter college three to four years behind in their academic achievements. It is the purpose of this special summer school at Iowa to assist the efforts being made at Rust College itself to close this gap and to pro-society. Since most Rust graduates go into teaching in Mississippi, this summer's program provides one method whereby the cycle of inadequately educated teachers giving consequently inadequate instruction to the next generation can be broken by providing an opportunity for potential teachers to be educated somewhat closer to their capabilities. It will cost approximately $160 per student to cover transportation costs, tuition fees, lunches, etc. Since the students will staying by their individual homes, the cost of their room and board will be staying by their individual hosts. It is our hope to bring 40 Rust students to this campus this summer, at a cost of approximately $6500. The need for additional funds to finance cultural exchanges, etc., is set forth in the enclosed brochure, which also describes the institutional relationship between the University and Rust and LeMoyne College. Your contributions to support this summer's program are tax deductible through the University of Iowa Foundation. The enclosed envelope may be returned with your contribution via University mail. Checks should be made payable to the U of I Foundation - RILEEH. I think that you will be interested in knowing that last summer's program was related a distinct success by all concerned. Its efforts have already been felt at Rust, where the past summer's students have provided an intellectual leaven and perspective which has already resulted in changes in the outlook and atmosphere of the college. I hope that you will help to make this summer's program equally successful. Sincerely, Paul M. Neuhauser Assistant Professor of Law and Chairman, RILEEH Finance Comm. PMN: rc Enclosure
