HEALTH VETERANS ADMINISTRATION HOSPITAL Highway 6 West Iowa City 338-0581 Honorably discharged veterans in need of care. JOHNSON COUNTY AMBULANCE SERVICE 351-6111 or 351-8879 Expensive FREE JOB PHYSICAL Hawkeye Area Community Action Program 221 So. Linn St. Iowa City 338-3696 Job physicals are paid for if applicant falls within Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) poverty guidelines. Tell a friend. LA LECHE LEAGUE OF IOWA CITY Mary Kay Wissink 1130 Hotz Ave. Iowa City Serves women who are interested in breastfeeding. Meetings held the first Tues. of every month at Mary Kay Wissink's house at 8 p.m. Mary Kay (338-6562) and Grace Kavaliunas (351-7176) both welcome questions by phone. ANIMAL CARE (Dogs and Cats) Distemper shots after they are two months old; rabi shots after six months, and the best time to neuter an animal (a birth-control device) is between six months to one year. To check for worms bring a stool sample to the vets (don't de-worm when animal is pregnant). If the animal is constantly scratching his ear, bring him to the vet to check on ear mites not visible to teh human eye but very annoying. In delivery, a new mother sometimes needs help to activate the instinct. If mother doesn't clean sac of mucus off the body of baby, take a rough towel and gently rub around the baby's nose. This usually clicks on the natural instinct. Give animals a few drops of soy bean oil daily to encourage a healthy, shiney coat. The University Hospital Pharmacy is very expensive. When they give you a prescription to fill there, carry it to a drugstore downtown. CLINICS FAMILY PLANNING CLINIC University Hospital, Iowa City 356-2539 Open Thursday night by appointment. Appointments made from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Free examinations, contraceptives (IUD, pills, diaphragm) and pregnancy tests. No age limits. Students referred through Student Health. The clinic is funded by the government, so they ask you to fill out questionnaires, but they are only for statistical reasons. They seem like basically good people, but they have been known to deny contraceptives to a woman whose husband didn't want her to have them, and each doctor tries to talk you into getting his own pet contraceptive. Do your own research on the subject first and come prepared, and knowing what you want. (Remember, they are mostly male doctors and don't have to use any method on themselves.) Also, be prepared for a long wait. PREGNANCY TESTS Both the Free Medical Clinic and the Family Planning Project give free pregnancy tests. If you go to Student Health, you will probably be referred to the Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic at the University Hospital, which will cost something. PAGE 7
