Stubee, Director This male alcoholic treatment-recovery house is founded on AA philosophy. The men in this 22-member household have mostly come from an alcoholic treatment center - few have walked in from the street. It is a completely voluntary service. DRUG REHABILITATION Eighth Ward West Iowa City (Veterans Administartion Hospital 338-0581, Ext. 378 Dr. Penningroth, Head The program is set up entirely by its members who deicde curriculum schedules and readaptation procedures in the way they consider most relevant. They meet each morning for a rap session. The VA provides medical care, including methadone maintentance for those kicking the heroin habit. The phases of the program are: the clean up phase, "getting your head on straight," and getting back into the community. The service is available for any veteran. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS 511 Melrose Ave. Iowa City 351-9813 A fellowship of men and women who meet regularly to solve their common problem. A woman went into the Gynecology Clinic at University Hospital with an infection in her uterus caused by an IUD. She asked the doctors to take her IUD out and give her a diaphragm. The doctor said, "You don't want to do that, do you," and she asked why not, and he said, "Well a diaphragm isn't aesthetically pleasing." CRISIS CENTER 351-0140 2pm-2am A short term telephone counseling service for people with all sorts of problems: loneliness sexual or marital problems, or suicide. No records are kept on the identity of the caller, and all conversations are confidential. The volunteers are trained by experts, but most of their sensitivity cam out of role playing. Right now their address is confidential, but they plan to open a drop-in center soon.
