Thomas Jefferson, 1787 THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA AND MILITARY RESEARCH Last year grants and contracts from the Department of Defense amounted to roughly $1.6 million. This current year the figures are comparable. These figures do not include more indirect relationships with the military such as grants from corporations who use research to serve the military-industrial complex. Nor do these figures take into account the leaves of absence of faculty members who use knowledge gained through work at the University to assist the military. Also not included is the money paid by the Defense Department to the University for the training of military personnel ($50,000 last year). The University's contract with the Rock Island Arsenal offers a classic example. Since 1967 the University has been selling computer services to the U.S. Weapon's Command at the Rock Island Arsenal. Last year that total had grown to $300,000, roughly 16.2% of the entire budget of the Computer Center. Tests conducted at the Arsenal for structural and accuracy problems of large guns result in a more thorough killing of Vietnamese people. One way or another This darkness got to give.
