NEW THEATRE COMPANY Mrs. John Grant Unitarian-Universalist Building 10 S. Gilbert St. They specialize in short plays, often original, not generally performed by other theatre groups. A minimum of props, make-up, lights; actors and audience are free to use their imagination to create the illusion. THE LAMP IN THE SPINE POETRY READING SERIES Seeks to provide an alternative to the sameness of the Writers' Workshop readings. Thus far Robert Bly and Thomas McGrath have read. EPSTEIN'S POETRY READINGS Almost every Thursday, readings by local poets. Eith o'clock p.m. at 109 S. Clinton. BLACK GENESIS TROUPE Julie Merritt, Choreographer and Director 351-0370 Afro-American Cultural Center 353-6207 Poetry readings, dance, skits, scenes, all created originally within the troupe which performs once a semester on campus, and occasionally off campus. BLACK ONYX deals with the history of the black past in dance, skits, scenes, etc., and BLACK CHILD, using those media, with a young black growing up. CENTER FOR NEW PERFORMING ARTS Oakdale 353-3282; 353-3346 The CNPA presents interdisciplinary dance, theatre, art, film, video, music, writing and printing events. The Center and its artists are funded jointly by the Rockefeller Foundation (blood money) and the university. The whole project is something of an experiment--an exciting one that we are lucky to have. People are always needed to volunteer as performers in these productions. IOWA CITY COMMUNITY THEATRE Box 827, Iowa City Performances held at 4-H Fairgrounds, Highway 218, one mile south of the airport. The ICCT presents about four plays a year, and conducts acting workshops and children's theatre as well. Try-outs are announced in the Press-Citizen.
