ALL RECREATION IS LIKE THE DEAD STARFISH, STILL VIBRATING, BUT NO LONGER SOLVENE --JACQUES-PAUL NEKOOSA (1837) swimming QUARRY STORY AND SKINNYDIPPING First of all, there is no Iowa law specifically forbidding swimming nude. You are not allowed to "expose yourself" in pubic, but if you take off your swimming suit after you get into the water and put it back on before you leave, you are not showing anyone anything. The police have no right to ask you to get out of the water so they can see whether you are naked or not. (David Sundance just took that to court.) However, there is always the possibility of getting hassled anyway. The best thing to do is to find some secluded place where no one is around who will mind. Second, last summer some Iowa City freaks started swimming in a small, privately owned quarry. The farmer who's land it was on said that anyone could swim in it, but he asked two things: that no one swim naked because he had two daughters around, and that no one bring their dogs, because he didn't want them chasing his cattle. Some people thought these regulations too repressive for them--they went skinnydipping and brought their dogs. With all this in mind, here are some good swimming places around Iowa City. Have a good time, but respect the identity of the people who are there, and be receptive to their ways. Also, take your beer cans home with you. Don't leave them there. CEDAR VALLEY QUARRY Go west on Interstate 80 to North Liberty, then turn north, over the interstate onto a gravel road, go about 5 miles and turn right before you get to a blacktop, onto another gravel road. This will take you straight to the Cedar River, then turn right along the river for 3/4 of a mile, and then right again to the quarry. The whole trip is about 25 miles, but worth it. The water is clean, surrounded by limestone cliffs, trees, and good vibrations--the nicest place I ever sawm in. SWIMMING POOLS Outdoor swimming pools at City Park and Mercer Park. Open from May to September. BITING FISH QUARRY North on Highway 1, past the interstate, and then turn right before you get to a bridge, about 2-3 miles. Bear left, and park car in a turnaround. Walk up and then down a hill to the water. This quarry has a muddy bottom, with some weird biting fish (they don't really hurt but give you a start), but it's close (5 miles). PAGE 39
