RESERVOIR BEACH North on Dubuque St., 4 miles past the interstate. Follow the sign to Coralville Dam, blacktop down to river. The water is shallow, with a sandy bottom, watch out for holes. Five miles. LAKE MACBRIDE 4 miles west of Solon A large artificial lake, and surrounding woods. Swimming, boating, fishing, showers, camping, trials. bicycling CORALVILLE DAM A magnificent, though hilly ride. Go out Prairie du Chien Road, pass over the Interstate and follow the signs to the Dam and Recreation area on the east side of the Iowa River. To return, you can cross over to the west side of the dam and follow the road out of the recreation area to Old 218. When you reach Old 218, go north (right) for about one eighth of a mile and turn west (left) on the first gravel road. After another eighth of a mile you will come to a T-turn. If you want the shortest return to Iowa City, turn left on the gravel road from the T intersection (dotted line on map) and come into Coralville on First Avenue. If you turn to the right, however, at the T intersection, you can follow that road up to North Liberty. To get home from North Liberty, take the black-topped country road running north and south. (The only other north-south roads leading out of North Liberty are Old 218 and New 218, and the county road, so it should be easy to find.) Travel sough on this road, and you will hit Twelfth Avenue in Coralville. The total distance for the short route is 12 miles--for the long route, about 22 miles. [[Map text]] N. Liberty County Road I-80 Coralville Reservoir DAM Prairie du Chien I-80 Iowa City [[end map text]] SLED SLOPES City Park and Hickory Hill (off Conklin Lane & Cedar) BICYCLE ROUTES from Project Green WEST BRANCH A little-traveled blacktop country road--go east on Court St. until it ends and then take the dirt road to the north (left) about one quarter of a mile until you come to a blacktop road. Turn east (right). This is the road to West Branch. You can either return this way, or follow old Highway 1 back, which is more heavily traveled. Highway 1 will bring you in on Rochester Ave. The round trip distance is about 20 miles. HOW TO FIX A BICYCLE FLAT If you go riding in the country, it is a good idea to carry a patch kit and a pump in case of a flat. You do not have to remove your wheel in order to fix a flat. If you have a flat while you are riding your bicycle, it will be due to a fairly large puncture. Turn the bike over and look over the tire carefully and you will probably find the spot. Mark this place on the tire. Now remove the valve stem and pull the tire off the wheel and pull the tube our of the tire. Look for the hole in the tube behind the place that was marked on the tire, patch the tube, put the tire back in place, pump up the tire and ride off. OLD HIGHWAY ONE A good blacktop, scenic countryside, little traffic. Go out West Benton St. about two miles past Carriage Hill. Turn south (left) on the first North-South blacktop west of University Heights. To get to Sharon Center, follow this road across Highway 1 and keep going south on the old highway. To continue on to Kalona, stay on Old 1 about two miles past Saron Center, then go west (right) at the turn until you come to Highway 1. At the junction of this road and Highway 1 is the Kalona Cheese Factory. Take the carriage trail along the side of the road to Kalona (four miles further). The total distance to Kalona and back is 32 miles. If you turned around at Sharon Center, it is 22. PAGE 40
