REQUIREMENTS FOR PLEDGING A. High school graduates with no college experience: Must have 1) 2.5 high school grade point, or 2) graduate in upper one-half of senior class, or 3) be above the 35th percentile in your ACT composite score. B. Students with more than 6 hours of college work must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point for all college work completed. C. There are absolutely NO restrictions as to race, color, or national origin. Aside from these definite, unwavering statements, some requirements of a more intangible nature should not be ignored. You should be willing to step into a situation of communal living on a give and take basis—you can gain only if you yourself are willing to give of yourself to those with whom you are living. You should accept the challenge of betterment to a number of goals; those of your fraternity as well as those of a more personal nature. But basically, and most importantly, is the requirement that you realize what the fraternity program is and what it can do for you—which is what this booklet is all aobut. Read it carefully and determine for yourelf whether or not you can meet and make something of the challenge that lies ahead in the next four years of your life. Dear Future U of Iowan, You are about to embark on a four-year journey which can be the most enriching, enjoyable, and meaningful adventure of your life. The University of Iowa opens the door for you to a world of the finest educational opportunities available. How you capitalize on these opportunities will determine the amount of enrichment that you will gain. The University Catalogue lists hundreds of courses that will be open to you as an undergraduate. The fraternity program can supplement this list with "informal courses" which we feel are essential to your education. All of these courses are electives and are four-year programs. You will not be graded or given credit for these courses, instead, the only rewards will be to yourself as a person. Such courses are character development, scholarship, encouragement, leadership, responsibility, mutual regard, integrity, social poise, and a special, though ancient, course in brotherhood. The decision you make will not only carry through the four years, it will be for a lifetime. I sincerely hope that you capitalize on the opportunities that will give you the greatest reward and satisfaction. If you have any questions concerning fraternities, please direct them to me.
