"the essence of freedom is that each of us shares in the shaping of bis own destiny. Freedom to seek the title of peacemaker depends on staying as strong as we need to be for as long as we need to be. to share in shaping our destiny, each of us must stand ready to contribute to our Nation's strength though military service." RICHARD M. NIXON President of the United States Why We Have the Draft the Selective Service System was created to provide an orderly method of registering the young men of the Nation and classifying them as to their availability for military service from the viewpoint of the national health, safety, or interest. Your Duties - Your Rights When you registered with the Local Board you signed up for military service if you are needed. if the Armed Services need many men your chances of being called will be greater. When military manpower needs are low, the chances of your being called will be less. The Department of Defense determines how many are needed to serve. It is a privilege to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States. Most of the man now in the Armed Forces volunteered. Since not enough volunteer, however, local draft boards must make up the difference. Your Right to Personal Appearance and Appeal Every time your Local Board classifies you, it sends you a Notice of Classification. You should read it carefully. This Notice tells you that you have a certain number of days to ask for a personal appearance before your Local Boards. All you have to do is write to your board and say "I want a personal appearance". This Notice also tells you that you may appeal. The State Appeal Board is not the State Headquarters of Selective Service, but, like the Local Board is a group of unpaid local citizens appointed by the President to look at your case. When you write requesting a proper appeal you Local Board sends your file to the State Appeal Board. Thant board makes a new classification which may or may not be the same as that given by the Local Board.
