The Afro-American Cultural Center The purpose of the Afro-American Cultural Center is to provide a place where Black culture can be nurtured and enhanced. Programing at the center emphasizes three tiers of the Black experience: cultural, educational and social. Generally, the "House," as it has been affectionately nicknamed by the students at the University, strives to serve the cultural, intellectual, psychological, and sociological needs of the Black students and the University community, as these needs relate to the Black experience in America. The House has become the focal point of the Black community at the University, providing a true view of today's Black role in America. The House is also considered to be the center of Black enrichment for Iowas City, creating an atmosphere which not only allows students to share their cultural awareness with each other but also helps students expand their cultural knowledge, by learning the traditions of the African culture.
