First Take Back the Night Meeting 26 August 82 Discussion began in a rather vague way. We talked about wether we could/wanted to organize one. What the burn out issues were. What had happened two years ago when we tried to organize one and failed. (the discussions in 1980 were an immediate burn out for many women. We immediately began dealing with the "what to do with men issue" and couldn't go on.) Soon we decided that yes we did want to "do one" and set about deciding what they meant. The issue of the make up of the board was raised (we are all young and white so far) yet what to do about that didn't seem to get thouroughly discussed. (my opinion) As we talked we came up with these "categories": PR -- policy, posters, letters to the editor, TV/radio, T-shirts, guerilla theatre, personal contact, speaking engagements, cantacts with groups $$ -- t-shirts, student orgs, donations, policy re: use, paid work, setting up an account T-shirts -- design policy, paid work, sizes, where work is done Committees -- Program -- gen'l nature of the event, issues addressed, speakers, when, equipment, signing, music, theatre, MARCH: route, permit, safety/security, policy, cops Policy -- men, accessibility: color, age, disability; meeting/org structure, media, $$, security, issues addressed. This list helped serve as a starting point. Although it may be nothing more than free association at this point. Then we decided to focus a bit more because we were getting tired. NATURE OF THE PROGRAM issues: violence against women: broad spectrum: diet pill, institutions, alchohol, abortion, sterilization, nukes, racism, classism, SEXISM (child raising institutional) violence to lesbians. ALSO positive issues: bonding, fighting back, power, what we can do. We read the letter from Jane which (I thought) was very helpful, it stressed the need for diversity and to emphasise the power, so that it's not a bummer We began to work off the already exisisting model. Rally, demo, speakers, music, march, etc. discussed "new" ideas like: how to improve the speak out, and possibly a survivor contingent. also to be prepared before and after. After: RVAP/DVP training, $$, Nobody's Victim, Before: readings on reserve about Racism and Packet: giving info about not sowell known groups -- Women's Residence, alchohol. FOR THE NEXT MEETING: Solicit ideas, members, make contact list, look for criticism, mature of speeches, WHO, look for help, Carol will check on the possibility of reserving material at the public library, and Tess will investigate permits. Date of event: OCT 16th (sat) Unity Day NEXT MEETING: TUES Aug 31st 5:30
