only, a woman's need to have a safe environment -- and environment free from the need to use those "survival tactics" -- can be fulfilled, if only during the time of the rally. It is true that all men are not sexual abusers, yet, all men have internalized sexist attitudes which allow violence to happen. Everyone grows up in a sexist society. Everyone is effected by such sexism. Men are privileged by sexism, and men need to acknowledge the privileges that being male gives them. (Such as having daily/nightly access to many area which women do not.) Men need to examine the many ways in which they manifest learned, sexist, male priviledge. (Such as: interrupting women at meetings, talking more, objectifying women, taking a job for more pay than a woman would receive.) In order for the anti-violence/anti-sexism movement to succeed, men must begin to examin these male priviledges and how they continue to hurt women. A part of the need for men to develop a responsible attitude about their sexism, is the issue of how men choose to support women's struggles. Often, when women only events are planned, men express feelings of alienation. This suggests that women are not appreciating the support men have to offer. When this issue is raised the question no longer becomes the validity of a separatist event, but rather "How much room are men willing to give women?" Demands that men be able to attend any and all public meeting and events around the issue of violence against women, essentially means that men still maintain a position of power and are unwilling to give that power up.
