One person I remember specifically from college was Ms. Shepard. I think even before I met her, when I first saw her picture in the college catalog, I liked her. So when I failed my English placement exam I was secretly pleased because Ms. Shepard taught the remedial English classes. The first day if class was actually the first time I saw her. She was telling us that we were to be divided into smaller groups so that we could receive special attention. I really wanted to get special attention from her, but my schedule didn't match hers, so I was put in a class taught by a Junior Assistant. I, of course, thought the rest of the class was incredibly Are you using this "ordinary" intensifier for humorous effect? ordinary and for the first time I tried desperately to prove my worth. I thought maybe if I was good enough, the Junior Assistant would tell Ms. Shepard about me. My opportunity came when we were assigned our first papers. They were to be argumentative essays; I did mine on gay rights in Dade county. This directed considerable attention in my direction, especially since everyone else chose really dumb topics. See note (One guy actually argued that baseball fans were better than any other sport fan, ; another, about Fall, and how it was the most beautiful season of the year. Early on, it was clear to me that standing out in this crowd was not going to be difficult.) The day our papers were due, our Junior Assistant informed us that we were going to read our papers aloud so that the whole class could discuss them. Just then, Ms. Shepard strode in, sat down and apologized for being late. The Junior Assistant further informed us that Ms. Shepard was going to observe the class. Confident that this was my big break for recognition, I volunteered to read first. I had barely finished the first paragraph when Ms. Shepard interrupted to comment on how good my opener was.
