For now I'll just mention that you tend to use the semicolon to mark a pause that may or may not separate tow independent clauses; sometimes what follows your semicolon is only a phrase that extends or explains the main clause. A comma may not be strong enough to mark these points in the sentence; a dash would be the usual choice. As you implicitly and dramatically recognize in your description of the smoker's movements, punctuation marks are ways of sending signals to the listener/reader. You've developed that notion in a witty and concrete way.
