Excluding men To the editor: Now, as in 1979, there seems to be a great deal of misunderstanding about the reasons for not allowing men to participate actively in the Women Take Back the Night rally. As a man, I fully support their exclusion of myself and other men. In doing some research and soul-searching about the systems of power that govern our lives the overwhelming evidence suggests the patriarchal power system controlling much of the world today thrives on the fear and dominance it instills in its adversary - women. Physical violence against women or the implied threat thereof has been consciously and unconsciously used by that patriarchy to maintain itself in a position of control.
