WHY A PEACE CAMP AT SENECA? The camp is on the borders of the Seneca Army Depot, storage place of the neutron bomb. In the fall of 1983, the Pershing II missiles will be sent from the Depot to Europe. These missiles are a new generation of weapon that escalates the arms race beyond its present murderous pace. Their range, speed, size and accuracy make them essentially unverifiable, thus making a nuclear weapons freeze nearly impossible, and war more likely. Europeans have demonstrated against these weapons in the hundreds of thousands. We feel a responsibility to our sisters and brothers who have known generations of war on their soil and whose cities and farms will be the first to be obliterated in deliberate or accidental strikes. WHY A WOMEN'S PEACE CAMP? *As lesbian and heterosexual women we choose to work in an all women's environment where we can support, strengthen and empower each other. At the camp we will strive to replace hierarchy and authority with respect and cooperation and try to create a way of living where care for the environment and one another become part of our daily lives. There we will build towards a feminist future, one to replace the racist, anti-semitic, classist and patriarchal society of our present. *As women, we know all too well the connection between militarism and the violence in our lives. The masculine ideal which the military perpetuates encourages force, dominance, power and violence: it is a concept of masculinity that victimizes women, children and nature. *We know that the billions of dollars spent on weapons have left hundreds of thousands without jobs, decent housing or health care. We know that the powerful men who make these decisions make war on us all, especially women, people of color, the poor, the disables and the elderly. The greedy military- industrial complex has stolen our right to decent, healthy life. * As women we see that we see that our earth, rivers and air are poisoned by the waste of the men's power and profit. WHY AT SENECA? * Because the history of the NY State countryside tells the story of women's resistance to hundreds of years of oppression and violence. In 1590 the women of the Iroquios Nation met in Seneca to ask the tribes to cease warfare. In the 1850's Harriet Tubman led slaves on the underground railroad through Northern NY to Canada. And in 1848 the first Woman's Rights Convention met in Seneca Falls. WOMEN-JOIN US AT THE CAMP FOR A DAY, A WEEK, OR ALL SUMMER. BRING YOUR WORKSHOPS AND CONCERNS, YOUR URGENCY, FEARS, ANGER, LOVE AND DETERMINED ACTIONS. A FEMINIST WORLD IS GROWING WILD AMONG THE RUINS BRINGING THE HOPE OF PEACE AND LIFE TO US ALL
