FANFARE 19 [centered] POLL NEWS by Art Widner Jr. [text in two columns] [first column] FINAL RESULTS OF AUTHOR POLL NOW IN! Bryantville, Mass.--CPOTU--Sept. 13, (PP) After 8 months of vote-gathering and tabulating, the biggest poll ever taken in fandom is finally closed with the unprecedented total of [underlined] 157 votes! This was far beyond even Art Widner's most sanguine expectations. He thought he would be lucky to get 100 votes all told. He would like to thank publicly all the fans who voted and made the poll a success, and especially those who gave it a helping hand in their mags when it was struggling along in its infancy. They were Harry Warner, Bob Tucker, and Bob Madle, the last named giving it space in his promag column. Special thanks also to Ted Carnell, who, despite having a war on his hands, rounded up 40 votes, and sent them across, going to considerable trouble and expense in the process. Without further ado, then, here are the figures. Don A. Stuart has been included on the list, to show the percentage of fans who voted for that name alone... 1 Campbell-Stuart 804 2 Weinbaum 718 3 EESmith 677 4 de Camp 610 5 HGWells 443 6 Williamson 405 7 Merritt 400 8 Lovecraft 381 9 Taine 265 10 Keller 257 11 Burroughs 229 12 Binder 220 13 CLMoore 193 14 Stapledon 173 15 Hubbard 151 16 Coblentz 144 17 Stuart 146 18 CASmith 113 19 Heinlein 104 20 Verne 100 (cont. in next column.) [second column] FIRST RESULTS IN NEW FANMAG POLL Bryantville--CPOTU--Sept. 13 (PP) With seven votes just in from the Solaroid Club, swelling the total to 22 in this just-started poll, we can put down the standings of the highest ten to date. It must be borne in mind, however, that all early standings in these polls are highly inaccurate, because the votes come in bunches from various sections of the country, and naturally, most people vote for the local favorite or the fanmag they all put out. But when the votes are all in, it averages up pretty well. We've been tinkering with the idea that hereafter all polls involving fans, fanmags, etc., where there is a lot of opportunity for favoritism, the voters shall not be allowed to vote for members of the same club, or fans residing within the same city, or fanmags that they put out themselves, or help publish in one way or another. (fanmag figures on p. 23) 21 Bond 97 22 Leinster 85 23 Van Vogt 82 24 Simak 73 Schachner 73 26 Kuttner 71 27 Del Rey 65 28 Howard 63 29 TSmith 59 30 Gallun 56 31 Hall 55 32 Fearn 53 33 Cummings 50 Hamilton 50 35 Kummer 45 36 Rocklynne 44 JBHarris 44 38 Quinn 38 39 Farley 34 Russell 34 Wellman 34
