Q. What is the exact connotation of the "Ivory Tower"?----Joe Gilbert.
A. An ivory tower is a poet's retreat. Charles-Augustine Sainte-Beuve first used the term in that sense, when, in 1837, he wrote:
Hugo, dur partisan
...combattit sous l'armure,
Et tint haut sa bannier au milieu du murmure:
Il la maintient encore; et Vigney, plus secret,
