STRANGE INTERLUDES HAIL TO DIGNITY by Gertrude Kuslan I agree with the EDITORIAL in most part, but don't quite see how one fanmag can undertake to run another. Especially one which is only seeing it's 4th issue. Hamling's policy is his own business. He has every right to use it as he sees fit; not FANFARE. ***Dear Mr. Miske. One can always count on him to turn something out which is truly inspired and poetic. An exquisite piece of writing. it's originality and complete absence from trite phrasing is quite entrancing. Is this a sample of the work that the pro authors should copy, Mr. Miske? Nevertheless, it's better than the average tripe. *** Did Moskowitz really need all those pages to tell us something we all know? UNITE OR FIE raises the eternal question. I don't think it's so much "Shall we unite?" but "Can we unite?" It's been tried before, a number of times, but nothing, I think, as complete as the plan you and Knight have outlined. And it sounds good. I like it. I seems to me that we really need something like that, if only the fans would co-operate. You know the States had a dickens of a time before they decided to adopt the Consititution. No one wanted to relinquish his own personal rights for the benefit of all. Try to swing this Federation. It's worthy of support. ***Don't care particularly for the breezy style used in the fanmag revieww. And definitely dislike the name calling employed. You ought to have more dignity. (Never heard of ityeds). ***STRANGE INTERLUDES -- Martin is quite the adult, isn't he? At least, he would be if his excess profanity indicated adult intelligence. It doesn't quite, I'm afraid. And that's that. I've been pretty lenient in spots, due either to my soft heart, or your influence; don't know. WHO IS GILBERT? by Pogo FANFARE IS wonderful - hecto job is best I've ever seen, and the articles good. By the way, who is this Gilbert person? Received a card from him about STFETTE. He writtes like a misled extrovert, but he's OK 'cause he liked STFETTE--or said he did. Wait 'til he gets the next issue! YOU'D BE SURPRISED by Bonnie Baker--er--Warner ('scuse please) I just received your Oct. issue of FANFARE, and was I surprised! It was so much better in every way. One thing I didn't like was the green ink, but the rest of the mag was so improved that as I said before I was really surprised. ***I can't think of any questions for your Q&A Dept., right now. I was going to ask you what A Merritt's first name is, but I have learned that it is Abraham. Merritt is my favorite author and I want to know more about him. (To the rescue, Miskue! -- awjr) ***Going back to the article by Joseph X. Gilbert --is it really that bad? I don't think it could be. MISKE MAY BE POSSIBLE by R.S. Bailey. Comment on FANFARE#4; Mag as a whole is better than average. Best contribution is CHANCE. This one really has a pro touch that makes it stand out in the mag. I couldn't believe it when I read it the first time. Really effortless and smooth style. ***Next best contribution is THE NEVER DEAD; good for a fanmag. ***Singleton's biog of R.D.Swisher, perfect. Singleton is one of the most skillful workers with words it has been privilege to read. (Tut tut, Bob, you're kidding!--ed) ***OUTSIDE by Miske indicates possibilities for the Startreader in the future. Luck to him. (Thanks for the comment, Bob; how about a longer letter?--yeds)
