FANTASY NEWS Page Three SCIENTIFILMS: by Mario Racic, Jr. "The Mysterious Dr. R", newly titled "The Electric Monster", soon to be released by UNIVERSAL has the following characters: Dr. Paul Rigas: Brilliant scientist who transforms a human being into a monster in attempting to prove a theory that man can be controlled by electricity. Success of his experiment results in death and destruction.....LIONEL ATWILL Mark Adams: Smart young newspaper reporter who seeks to unravel the mystery behind Dr. Rigas' experiments. Discovery of Rigas' secret give Mark the greatest story of the age -- a story he realizes can never be printed.....FRANK ALBERTSON June Meredith: Attractive niece and secretary of a noted scientist, who leads an investigation into the mysterious activities of her uncle's colleague.....ANNE NAGEL Dan McCormick: A huge, happy-go-lucky fellow whose amazing immunity to electricity propels him into a scientific experiment from which he emerges a human monster. His spectacular death writes a crashing finish to an amazing scientific achievement.....LON CHANEY, JR. Dr. John Lawrence: A kindly, distinguished electro-biologist whose efforts to stop the experiments of his mad colleague lead to his own violent death....SAMUEL S. HINDS SYNOPSIS The Time . . . . The Present The Place . . . . A Big City Big Dan McCormick (Lon Chaney, Jr.) is the sole survivor of an electric train crash in which all other passengers are electrocuted. Intrigued by Dan's apparent immunity to electricity, Dr. John Lawrence (Samuel S. Hinds) invites Dan to visit him at his laboratory. Dr. Lawrence's assistant is Dr. Paul Rigas (Lionel Atwill), who with almost maniacal fervor is conducting experiments to prove a theory that human life can be motivated and controlled by electricity. Against Dr. Lawrence's protests that the theory can only lead to disaster, Rigas insists that a body can be so electrolyzed that it will no longer be subject to normal pains and illnesses, thus eventually producing a superior race of men whose only need will be electricity. Dan consents to come and live [column break] SCIENTIFILMS Cont'd: at the Lawrence home. Secretly, Rigas subjects Dan to electrical tests, administering increasingly powerful charges until Dan developes an amazing degree of immunity. As a result he becomes a walking shell, behaving like an automaton. At last all is ready for the final test, Rigas pours a tremendous charge into Dan's body. The effect is astounding. Dan has become a superman -- his body literally glows, his strength is enormous. He is a human robot, controlled by the man who gave him his power -- Dr. Rigas. (This Synopsis will be concluded in the next issue of FANTASY NEWS) Brian Aherne and Kay Francis will return to the UNIVERSAL lot immediately after the holidays for a special production, "The Man Who Lost Himself". They will have top roles together in the picture which is reported to be a "romantic mystery-comedy." All signs seem to point to another fantasy film. Edward Ludwig will direct the picture and Lawrence Fox will produce it. CHAUVENET, EDITOR OF DETOURS, THROWS HAT IN RING FOR PRESIDENCY OF NFFF Lou Russell Chauvenet, popular publisher of one of the South's better known fan publications, has been nominated for the office of Presidency of the National Fantasy Fan Federation. The keynote of his election platform is expressed in one of its planks, "I believe that science and fantasy fiction as a field of literature can make small progress unless the adherents of this field are capable of promoting it in a mature manner."; and also in the plank, "---that this case (for the encouragement of stf) will receive a better hearing if backed by a responsible group of fans with an adult outlook". His platform stresses maturity and adulthood in fan affairs, and implies a gentle reproach to the fancies and foibles of teen age fans. Other candidates who have or will get nominating petitions signed by ten members of the NFFF are: Earl Singleton, Art Sehnert and Joe Gilbert. READ NEWS WHILE IT IS NEWS IN F.N.!
