BOOST S C I E N C E F I C T I O N GUEST EDITORIAL by Raymond A.Palmer. (Mr. Palmer is the Editor of AMAZING STORIES & FANTASTIC ADVENTURES) What in hell difference does it make how far "in advance" the first two issues of a magazine are "arranged for"? Arranged is right! At "regular rates"! I'm not arguing, Mr. Albing. But your regular rates aren't ours. Maybe it's relativity, eh? As for"established contributors" getting those rates, they should. I've got my established writers, you have a right to have yours. My only point is this. My "established boys" are simply being warned not to undersell me, under penalty of being tossed out on their ears as far as I am concerned. but I didn't see any of 'em in your books, so my "lurid phrases" gained their end. Self defense, sir. Survival of the most necessary--which to me, is me! Certainly I fear competition by a good magazine. My sales are liable to drop. I don't want that to happen. No doubt certains authors were "voluntarily helpful. Maybe their gamble will pay in the end. I gamble myself. But certain other authors weren't so voluntary, to judge from the revelation of Jimmy Taurasi. One fellow was "placed" and was "helpful" quite unintentionally. Luckily, he was able to get a check. Maybe all the rest will get them now that the book has become successful. If so, then anyone can say "Palmer fears Purdue--STIRRING SCIENCE STORIES--ASTOUNDING STORIES--THRILLING WONDER STORIES--Saturday Evening Post--and Catholic Messenger". Because they'll all be on an equal footing, with no marked aces up rather frayed sleeves.(C.2) [column break] FAN MAG REVIEW by Harry Warner, Jr. Sun Spots: vol.4, no.3. First Anniversary Issue, and for sheer bulk for the price, it's tremendous. 44 large, mimeod pp for a nickel. The contents, too, are much better than they have been in the past. You can't be cheated with that much wordage for 5¢. 31 Bogert Place; Westwood, N.J. The C entaum: vol.1, no.1. Not at all bad for a first issue, and it shows lots of promise. y20 large, heated pp plus heavy pink covers, for a dime. With some better material and a bit of experience, it should go places. GUEST EDITORIAL Cont'd: As for "inaccuracies in news items", I only know what I read in the papers. I believe in the news FANTASY NEWS dishes out. Sykora isn't from Burlington, Wisconsin. Sure, send me a notarized statement of Mr. Wollheim's salary, as earned from the magazines he edits, and I'll pay the income tax. I can write him a story and get it back, now that he pays for 'em! As for earning more than I do, that's easy, Mr. Albing. I'm a terribly underpaid genius. But I'm not kicking. Money is a curse. Just so I have enough to pay the U.S. their share of Don's income. What do I think of our Quarterly? Well, look at the next issue, on sale Feb 14, when it comes out. You said it kiddo, Reissue is the word. A good point, my man. A good point. Honesty is the best policy. I agree absolutely. For that kind assistance, I now Boy Scout one myself. Publish, in Arabic numerals, the equivalent of your "regular rates". My writers would honestly like to know, because I'm bought up for at least six months, and they can use a good market. They're good writers, too, and can do good yarns for you. But they're kind of foggy on the monetary return. Set 'em straight, willya, kid? Satevepost pays regular rates too, and how! Can I help it if I worry? THE QUEENS SCIENCE FICTION LEAGUE meeting scheduled for Feb 2 has been postponed to Feb 16.
