Page Four FANTASY NEWS SCIENTIFILMS by Mario Racic, Jr. "The Electrical Monster", formerly "The Mysterious Dr. R", produ ced by UNIVERSAL, and starring Lionel Atwill and Lon Chaney, Jr. SYNOPSIS (Concluded from last week) At the height of the experiment, Dr. Lawrence enters the laboratory. Furious at the spectacle, he tries to phone the police, but Rigas, fascinated by the power he has unleashed, causes Dan to kill him. Rigas then removes the electricity from Dan, returning the latter to a shrunken hulk. Dan is brought to trial and sentenced to the electric chair. Efforts of June Meredith (Anne Nagel), Dr. Lawrence's niece and secretary, and reporter Mark Adams (Frank Albertson) to probe into his strange behavior are of no avail. In the electric chair Dan absorbs three terrific shocks which return him to superhuman status. He breaks out of jail, an electrically charged monster, electrocuting all who try to stop him. Returning to the Lawrence, home, he kills Rigas who is about to forcibly subject June to his tests. Then donning a rubber suit, which will enable to retain his electrical energy, Dan picks up June's body and stalks out of the house which has been surrounded by police. But the rubber suit catches on a barbed wire fence, and Dan, releasing June, shrinks to nothingness as the life-giving electricity passes from his body into the wire. If this picture is actually as thrilling as the synopsis released by UNIVERSAL Studios, it is an absolute must for every tfan. COLUMBIA Pictures will soon film in Miami "Lost Atlantis", a story of the continent that sank into the Atlantic Ocean. CAMERA MAGIC will be used for new effects in UNIVERSAL'S "the Man Who Lost Himself". [J]ohn Fulton, the man who made the "invisible" actors possible in "The Invisible Man" series, is faced with a different problem in the new picture, however. Instead of making one actor invisible, his job is now to make him doubly visible--to make two men appear where only one man really is. The picture present Brian Aherne starred with Kay (Col. 2) [column break] SCIENTIFILMS Cont'd: Francis, in a dual role--one that of a wealthy, no-good, worthless young man, and the other a likeable, straightforward character. The two men have many scenes, much conversation and a lot of action together, and that is where Fulton's work comes in The double-character effect has been obtained photographically many times before and by various processes, but, according to Fulton, this time it will be done differently. Somewhat of the same technic (double-exposure against a black velvet back-drop) as was used in "The Invisible Man" will be used in the new film. The picture is a comedy-dream, a screen adaptation of a play for Leslie Howard, which was to be given in England until the war interrupted. Others in the cast are Henry Stephenson and S.Z. Sakall. SCIENTIRADIO, BOOKS,and PLAYS. Boris ( the monster) Karloff, appeared recently on the "Information Please" program (WEAF-8:30) and did remarkably well. Not only did he make a most un-monsterlike impression, he actually scintillated erudition. But he ran true to form in one respect--he proved himself especially adept in answering questions relating to murder.(wss) The best all-around stf broadcast now on the air is "Unlimited Horizons"(NBC Red Network, Fr, 11:30 EST). "Cosmic Rays" and "High Voltage" were heard recently. This thrilling series provides simplifed explanations of hitherto vague theories for the less-tutored fans, and technicalities galore for the fault-finders and sticklers. (ch) "The Lady In the Dark", a new starring vehicle for Gertrude Lawrence is a psychoanalytical play is at the ALVIN Theatre in N.Y. In the show are Bert Lytell of the original film version of "The Bat" and Victor Mature of "One Million B.C." fame. The above play is being published in book form by Random House which is also putting out "Arsenic and Old L ace" the current play starring B oris Karloff. (wss)
