FANTASY NEWS Page Three LEO MARGULIES AT QUEENS SFL! OSCAR J. FRIEND. F.B. LONG , HARRY WALTON, MORT WEISINGER, JULIUS SCHWARTZ AMONG CELEBRITIES PRESENT Arising like a phoenix out of the ashes of near-ruin, the Queens Science Fiction League met on April 6, 1941 to welcome a large delegation of professionals from STANDARD PUBlications, and again on May 4 to reject the treasury report of Scott Feldman and Hyman Tiger, former officers; to provide for the democratic ejection of unwelcome visitors, elect a new member, and start the ball rolling toward a successful annual meeting. The meeting of April 6th was call to order at 3:45 P.M. among the more than 20 persons present were R.G. Thompson, Charles Hidley, Frances Sykora, Mario Racic, Jr., Mr and Mrs Will Sykora, Julius Schwartz, Sam Moskowitz, Harry Walton, Frank Belknap Long, Mort Weisinger-Editor of THRILLING WONDER STORIES, Leo Margulies-Editorial Director of STANDARD Publications; Oscar J. Friend, J.J. Millard, Mr. Raleigh, circulation manager at STANDARD, and Bob Studley. Will Sykora, Chairman-pro tem, read the resignations of Hyman Tiger, former Director, and Scott Feldman, former Secretary-Treasurer. A quorum being present, the resignations were unanimously accepted. Bob Studley also resigned his office of Librarian due to the pressure of outside work, and his resignation was also accepted. The following new officers were elected: Will Sykora, Director; Mrs. F. Sykora, Secretary-Treasurer; Alex Osheroff, Librarian. The remainder of the meeting was given over to the guests. Oscar J. Friend made one of the most entertaining and interesting talks ever heard at the Queens meeting. Mr. Margulies, after much coaxing, (Page 4) WEIRD TALES & PLANET LINE-UPS Cont'd: mancy in the modern manner. "The Other", a 5700 worder by O.M. Cabral, will be illustrated by Paul Dorgoff. It is a child-ghost tragedy. The ghost of a small boy who drowns in a pond comes back for his child companion. Thorp McClusky's 5500 worder will also be illustrated by Dorgoff. A man obsessed by his wife's penchant for piano-playing, murders her and retires to a lodge free of the morbidly disturbing instrument. But someone plays a spinet he overlooked and he confesses his crime. The title will be "The Music From Infinity". "The Half Haunted" will be the title of a ghost breaker short by Gans T. Field. Bok will do the drawing for this yarn about the popular Judge Pursevant. WEIRD TALES also have on hand "The Werewolf Howls" by Clifford Ball, "Death of the Kraken" by Dr. David H. Keller, and "The Man Who Lived", a fantasy by Raymond F. O'Kelly. Associate Editor H.A. Perkins says two of these three will be used to round out the issue. PLANET STORIES has several good yarns lined up for their Fall number, among which are listed two short stories by well-known fans Henry Hasse, old time fan, will have "A Canto For Dante", and Henry Andrew Ackerman will have "South Of Prepontis". The popular Nelson S. Bond, originator of "The Loblies" will have a short called "Shadrack" Allen Connell's "Espionage In Space" has also earned acceptance, as have "The Victory Of Klon" by William S. Peacock, "The Ubiquitous" by Harry Walton, and "Dead Man's Planet" by R.R. Winterbotham, The above titles are tentative and may be changed on publication. Malcolm Reiss says that the Finlay cover for the summer issue was so fine that he is seriously considering another Finlay painting for the Fall number. GET A PRESS CARD!
