THE STATUES On alabaster pillars reaching high in some strange sky Are fixed two godly images of stone - The one, a shapeless, squatty thing, its sight a single eye; The other, tall, with outspead wing, whose stone will never fly, Though travelers say they hear it sing a soulful sobbing sigh At night from its imprisoning throne. --R.A. Hoffman [Full page illustration of scene in poem, signed "A. Rogers"]
