SCIENTFILM REVIW by our Sceince films editor, MARIO RACIC, JR. ------------------------------------------ METROPOLIS: UFA Film, made in 1926. Directed by Fritz Lang. Story takes place in the future....; Once every so often a party from the working class, who live in the inderground cities, deep in the earth, visit the electrivity, wich is Metropolis. On one occasion, Mary asended and caught the eye Eric, son of wealthy aristocrat. She enchated him and he follows her to the lower depths, the Middle Levels. He realizes the awful plight of the people. Eric, returns to his father, begs him to help the people, but Masterman turns a unhering ear. Below, the workes led by May plan a revolt.Rotwang, the inventor, learne of this and creates a robot, a perfect double of Mary (played by Mary). Mary learns of this, warns the people who, when revolting, were the people who, when revolting, were nearly drowned by tons of water, that began to pour down on them. In the end, they, of the lower levels, were promised a new deal, as Mary and Eric were joined----------------------- THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. Produced by Decla-Bioscop in 1919. Released by UFA. Silent film.... Cast:Warner Krauss as Dr. Caligari Conrad Veidt as Cesare; F. Feher as Francis; Lil Dowager as Jane; H.H. von Twardowsky as Alan; R. Lettinger as Dr. Olsen; R.Klein-Rogge as a criminal... The story begins in an insane asylum, with a patient telling the story to a doctor... He tells of an old medieval type village, and of a fair in wich the cheif drawing card is supposed to be a very old man, kept under a form of suspended animation, in reality hypnotism. The master of this hypnotized man sends his will mostly murders and robbery. The plot is well developed and the story ends with the unraveling of the murders. The film ends in the asylum the whole story is very fantastic and weird....... ADAMPS RIB. Produced by PARA, 1923 A modern story with prehistoric tale told in the middle of the picture. The daughter of a broker, falls in love with a fellow who works for the Museaum, and is in charge of the Dinousaur section. He shows a tablet decicting the invention of the bow and arrow. Then the picture tells the story in prehistoric days of this invention, love, intrigue, and tragedy of that time. The fantasy part covers about two reels of the total picture. The reset of the plot concerns modern times and is not fantasy--------------------- MONSIEUR STOP: Produced in 1907 by Emile Cohl (France). This is probably the first stfilm. The plot is not known, or the cast, but it concerned a "scientist who discovered how to arrest movement" ------------ THE GOLEM: UFA Film, made in 1920.
