PUTTING MY TWO CENTS IN By Erle Korshak Fandom, as we know it, has faced many crises during its existance. Although it has faced these many crises it has always managed to pass them successfully, for if it had not it would have perished. At the conclusion of the Chicon, fans representing all fan groups and sections were present. These delegates came and enjoyed themselves to such an extent that before they knew it they had buried old animosities, and new friendships sprung forth where before there was only dislike, and petty jealousies. Some of those present said in jest, "Gosh, fandom is going to be dull now. There are no more feuds!" It would have been nice if things had turned out that way. But alas, fandom has slept in a false security for a month and a half, and now awakes to find itself in another whirlpool of hate. The situation as it stands is briefly this: At the close of the Chicon it was decided by the fans attending from all over the United States to hold the 1941 Convention in Denver, Colorado. This decision was reached because of a number of reasons, a few of which are: (a) New York had the 1939 Convention. (b) The East had had the three or so Conferences previous to the Nycon. (c) Philadelphia has the annual Conference. (d) Chicago had the 1940 Convention hence the tendency to carry the spirit of science fiction conventions to the West, and (e) To prepare for the 1942 Convention in Los Angeles. These are reasons enough. However fandom is again at a crisis. It seems that New Fandom, the group that sponsored the Nycon (New York Convention), through its heads, the Three Famous Fans (?.E. Sam Moskowitz, William S. Sykora, and James V. Taurasi.) wants to sponsor a "Conference" (Editorial Note: The word "conference" is being used rather than "convention", in order to technically get around the meaning and implication of Convention. Come, come New Fandom --- lets call a spade a spade.) in Newark, N. J., in the Summer of 1941, which is, incidentally, the same time that the Denvention IS TO BE HELD. That is what is known as competition. Why is this happening, you ask?? Says New Fandom (Editorial Note: When we speak of New Fandom, we speak of the Three Famous Fans, NOT the club itself.) in a very whining voice, "We want a little fan gathering because we can't go all the way to Denver." Tsk, tsk, you poor little boys. DID THE CALIFORNIA FANS
