Wodehouses' MULLINER series, the author meets the odd and bibulous Jorken's at his club, and after buying drinks, Jorken's will bell of some of his "true" adventures. Or those of his friends. THE TALE OF THE ABU LAHEEB which starts the book is one of the oddest for it tells of the only wild animal unknown to man who possesses the ability to make a fire. OUR DISTANT COUSINS is a better known yarn contained in this book for it deals with a trip to Mars by an aviator-friend of Jorkens and his escape back to Earth. The odd thing about this yarn is that according to the aviator space is dazzling white not balck, since, you see, night is only the earth's shadow and once we get out of the shadow, all is eternal day! A LARGE DIAMOND tells of a plain in far Siberia which was in reality one tremendous diamond caused by a meteor fall. THE ELECTRIC KING has been reprinted many times and tells on the combining of modern dynamics and power plants with Tibetan prayer-wheels. The stories are all highly entertaining and worth reading.
The second book is entitled JORKENS REMEMBERS AFRICA, tho many of the stories do not deal with the dark continent. Published '34 by Longmans Green. The most stfal of the yarns is HOW RYAN GOT OUT OF RUSSIA, which relates how an Irish engineer who got tangled up with an emigre spy outfit, sent to Russia and there was captured by the Soviets and is sentenced to die. How he escaped by volunteering to take part in an interplanetary flight and what happened makes the yarn. The most amusing yarn, MYSTERY OF THE EAST tells what happens when Jorkens decides to win the Irish sweepstakes by engaing an oriental magician to work a spell on his ticket so that it would be drawn first. But he takes no chances and engages two mystica to do it, and what followed as a result will take the reader by surprise. THE SLUGLY BEAST is the sequel to OUR DISTANT COUSINS......................................
