There is no attempt to conceal the truth about his nature from the reader, and though until near the end of the book the majority of the characters do not learn what he is, it is so painfully evident from the first few pages that none buy the least intelligent can miss the implications. This, of course, was intended. Dracula lived in a mountain fastness in the heart of Europe. The book begins with the diary, kept in shorthand, of Johnathan Harker, about whom much of the action revolves. He has been sent by his employers, as an agent, to fill a lease on an estate in England Dracula wishes to occupy. Harker finds the Castle of Dracula, after a hard journey, on which incredible things happened. There he is greeted by the vampire, and soon finds he is a virtual prisoner. He finally escapes, but the horrors he has undergone have made him ill. He returns to his wife. Mina Harker-- or rather, to his bride, for they are married in the hospital where he recuperates. He vows never to tell his wife of the horrors he experienced, unless it becomes necessary. His diary he gives into her care, with instructions never to open it unless absolutely necessary. But Dracula has come to England. One of Mina Harker's friends, Lucy Westenra, becomes inexplicably ill. Finally, despite a famous surgeon's -- Dr/ Van Helsing's-- every effort, she dies and is not dead. Van Helsing is the only one, up to this point, who knows what actually is happening.
