UTOPIA WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE! - Bob Tucker - (proper apologies to Universal Pix) Hidden somewhere in the immense vastness that makes up South America,--so they tell me; I have never been there-- deep within rich and flower-ing jungles there seems to lie a Never-Never Land. A Never-Never Land for [underlined] some people, that is. For obviously certain characters cannot be ad-mitted there; but they try, sometimes with force --so they tell me-- . This Never-Never Land is an utopia; altho you may have you own name for it. Some may call it Shangri-La, some Utopia, some Valhalla, ot just - "the green pastures". And certain wise characters (wise to themselves ) simply call it 'Never-Never Land' To sum up, it is the place you go if you are not [underlined] too bad, and amazingly enough, not [underlined] too good. Providing you can find your way there, for there will be no signposts --or so they tel me, I have never been there myself-- . [small illustration next to this paragraph of fence post with barbed wire wrapped around it] And sometime during this present decade, one among us whom we all know will set his sails in search of this place; for this place is the actual picturization of every fic-tionized utopia he has ever heard or read about. In this wonderful abode of never-ending life will be the existence you dream of, for altho certain joys and sins practiced on the rest of the world will bar you from Never-Never Land, once there you may indulge as you please ---or so I am told; I have never been there myself-- . This personage whom we know so well will accuratly find his way to there, for it seems that he has been not too bad, nor too good, and the Wise Ones who oversee the fabulous land send birds and beasts to turn his footsteps. He is the very first of a species new to the Wise Ones, and they wish to introduce him on the exclusive little colony to test his reaction, and those of the people before him --- particularly these others, for this newcomer has dreamed and read of utopias and could red-ily take such into his stride; while they -- the Hosts and the flock -- have not as yet met one such as he. It would be a most interesting ex-periment to find if the Utopians could take this newcomer into [underlined] their stride! As this stranger approaches, he will suddenly find barring his way--so they tell me; having never saw it myself-- a barbed wire fence of a very coldly commercial nature. Barbed wire manufactured for one express purpose, be it strung around Utopia or Nor Man's Land. The traveller will stop of course, and regard this unexpected barrier. Then he will lift his weary eyes and see Utopia just beyond. For a few moments he will stand there regarding this spectacle, in a strange yet "I know ev-ery detail" attitude. Once more his eye will fall to the high and very wicked barbed wire fence across his way. "I might have known...." he will wail. "I might have known I couldnt gain entrance! [underlined] Just because I didn't join the Illini Fantasy Fiction -eers!" (END) [Image of barbed wire fence as footer.]
