[Title centered; large rounded font] Thoughts from England [smaller text next to title] -excerpts from a personal letter- [centered] Ted Carnell (( On the proposed English professional magazine, "New Worlds", that nev-er appeared: )) "In fact, there has been a hell of a lot of trouble with the Company. Luckily for me I was not due to commence work officially untill April 1st. So I'm out in the clear as far as the trouble is con-cerned. However, I had an idea there was going to be trouble some time back, and that is why I (was) so careful to keep the news [underlined] officially (( underlining is ours -editor )) from the fans. It might just happen that the magazine will not be published, and I do not feel as though I want to tell the world I've been played for a sucker." (( fandom does not hold such a view, we believe. -editor )) (( In answer to a question put by Tucker in a previous letter: )) "Yep, brother Acky certainly keeps me supplied with news and magazines. I reckon that it is costing us both a small fortune in airmail postages. We write each other about every week -- sometimes twice, and it usually takes about nine days for the trip. Which isn't bad going, is it?" "..... which reminds me that this ruddy war is catching up on me pretty fast. I'll be in the Army by the end of the year, I expect, but don't lose heart yet, fella, (( Tucker )) I'll be writing you for quite a while yet." (( To which Tucker replies: "if things don't brighten up, chum, I'll be writing [underlined] you on military stationary, from some place in Hawaii, or the Phillipines!")) "......Taurasi (has) requested my co-operation on the newly reshuffled S.F.L. And, not knowing that Forrie had resigned I agreed to be British representative. The darned annoying part of it is that directly I heard about Pohl's new organization (( Science Fictioneers )) I wrote and offer-ed him my services as British Rep -- and didn't even get a reply! Boy! This is beginning to look funny. First the guys have a friendly war, then it develops into a real cut-throat affair -- then they carry it right into the magazine rackert......" "will write you again before the Lamp goes out in Europe. Give my re-gards to the boys in the Illini Fictioneers. Anything I can do to assuage the burden of Life, just let me know, I'll be only too pleased not to oblige." [double line break] BECAUSE you do not live in Illinois is no reason for you to not be represented in [title underlined] Fantasy Fictioneer! Drag out those old art-icles other fan magazines have rejected, and let us them reject them too! [title underlined] FANTASY FICTIONEER is interested in what [underlined] you think should fill up the Convention time. What [underlined] you think on various activites as has been proposed in present and past issues. Let us see a full page article from you on your views of the coming Chicon, what you would like to see take place there, what you would [underlined] not like to see take place, and any suggestions you may have. These pages [underlined] are open to you, you know!
