SPACEWAYS 23 AN ACK DOTE by FORREST J ACKERMAN And it came to pass one day in the city of New York, in the mighty metropolis of New York, in the office of a certain editor who shall not go unnamed: it was Mary Gnaedinger of Famous Fantastic Mysteries; that young Bok, illustrator of the outre, by the fans beloved, sat facing Munsey's Mrs G, as, over ye editorial desk, he discust with "Nadine" (a Futurian) his latest drawing for one of soon-to-be-reprinted classics; & as fantasy's favorite femineditor lookt up, ready to point at something particularly fine in the picture, her eyes met those of the artist & a popular song was born. Everyone has heard it. It later served as the title of a motion picture, "Hans across the Table." BEACON LIGHT (concluded from page 15) Here's two more Lovecraft tales which were not included in the volume "The 0utsider": they are "The Moon Bug" and "The Hound"... .Let's see, now, a few personal items before we close shop. Charles R. Tanner is still in the hospital for tuberculosis. He'll probably be there for some months to come, he says. Then he'll have to start writing in a big way. After almost a year, we understand, his latest "Tumithak" story is finally due to appear in the November S̲u̲p̲e̲r̲ ̲S̲c̲i̲e̲n̲c̲e̲ ̲N̲o̲v̲e̲l̲s̲..Hank Kuttner and C. L. Moore, after a dismal year—dismal to them because they don't like Gotham—in New York City are at last happily on the way back to the West Coast... .Jack Woodford makes some nasty cracks about stf. in his book: "Plotting or How to Have a Brain Child". Apparently he sees no difference between stf. and the sex-sadist stories. It might be added that Woodford is a past master of the latter... .Which about finishes us for now, so off goes the Beacon and we'll see you next issue, fans. ADVERTISEMENTS SUPER -HIGHWAYS AROUND THE WORLD..... If the rail and ship magnates couldn't prevent it. ROCKET TO THE MOON IN TWO YEARS .... If some of the billions spent on battleships were used to further the research. Science-fiction's dreams seem doomed to be nothing but dreams. Science is forcefully held to paths which lead to the breeding of human suffering and world-wide misery. "Give us bread, for God's sake!" cry starving millions, 'while a million bushels of good wholesome wheat lies in the Duluth storehouses. "G̲u̲n̲s̲, not butter!" is the savage answer. "You are making us slaves to those machines!" cry the workers. "Give us our due!" "You are un-American; you are traitors; you should be put to death!" comes ruthlessly back. WHY SHOULD THIS BE? WHAT CAUSES THIS TRAGEDY? We have the answer! We would like you to know it, too, We ask you to join our INTELLECTUAL BROTHERHOOD OF PRO-SCIENTISTS by sending 10¢ to R.
