Two days later Jones and Gardner, equipped with stratosphere ascent suits, stood near the now silent ring of faint luminescence - the world was dead except for them. Jones stared moodily at the space inside the ring and, without a backward glance, he stepped forward into the ring and vanished. With a gasp Gardner sought to grab his friend but failed. He paused, turned - and with a wave to the bleak lifeless world he wheeled and plunged into the unknown.... end (Editor's note.
