Vanguard Boojum Page 27 ************************ Tumbrils- Ye Gods! What happened to the cover? I'll bet it an experimental cover by a moron, or is it only my copy that looks like this? About fillers: they are all right as long as they are not overdone. I imagine d.k. will have more to say on this subject! "Worksheet For a Better World"-a man after me own sentiments; I'll donate the bullets! Joe's Jotting-Nice cover! "X-Ray on Vanguard": I think Joe is being a little rough on u subscribers. Sure Vanguard needs more publishers, but don't kill us off on that account. I'll bet lots of the subscribers would like to write of publish and will eventually. but for some reason or other, they may be delayed from doing so at the present time. For example: I was married while in the army; now that i'm out, I'm faced with the problem of settling with my family in a town I've never lived in before. I plan to go back to school this fall, introducing more problems. In addition to these difficulties, I have no typewriter and they are damned expensive and hard to get. My last letter to Vanguard, which Lowndes was good enough to publish, was handwritten; so you can appreciate the difficulties of publishing it. Not my editors care to receive handwritten items. Adn I haven't hit the publishing expenses difficulties yet! I'd like to publish-as a matter of fact, 8 or 9 years ago when I worked for a printing company. I used to put out a 3 or 4 page gossip sheet for the gang I hung around with. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. But I don't have these facilities any more. Give us time, though, and I think you'll see that we do our share to keep Vanguard on its high standards and functioning smoothly. If you get many letters like those you printed, perhaps you can come out with a "Dear Joe" volume! "The Vow"-good. Vanguard Variorum- Three cheers for Van Vogt. Takes real courage to stand up to d.k. like he did! I find these discussions very interesting because I'm one of the many who did not get the full impact of the story, and these discussions do much the clear up my misunderstandings. The rest of the comments in VV were very interesting. Temporary- Thersites again! Cute! Vanguard Amateur-I guess Lowndes' comment on Kennedy's editorial are more along the lines of what I wanted to say, but couldn't express myself as well as he. ((I think you did okay, Al. RWL)) ************************ Controversy Davis Lowndes Davis: It's a peculiar fobia Doc has, this avoidance of all things fannish. In the Feb 46 Agenbite he slams Science * Fiction thus: "Title of this publication is sadly inadequate, and carries bad connotations." So the word "sciencefiction" carries bad connotations, eh Doc? In spite of signifying a type of fiction which you read and presumably enjoy & which was once your bread & butter? In spite of signifying, secondarily, the amateur groups from which you baby, Vanguard, was largely recruited? Gad. As for this parish among words, "fan", well--if you wan tot escape whatever unpleasant connotations it may have, you'd better quit Vanguard. To the outside observer, you apa doesn't differ so much from the older apa which is it other parent, you know.
