Vanguard Boojum page 30 *************************** macVert (cont.) With the negations of the article, I agree. It seems we must reduce ourselves to the unfortunately circular postulate, "All generalizations are fals," & go our painfully uncertain way from there..... I like Charles much more than I like Cats.... Fine issue, Doc, slim tho it be. Stefantasy: Title of this publication is sadly inadequate and carries bad connotations. ... by all means to not limit yourself to ads. "Aht Dept." * "Po'try Page" in this issue were good stuff, not to mention the uproarious erratum in re page numbering. Announcements: Good advertising. Googo: I was attracted by the blind, floolhardy courage with which Brazier blurted, "We both want material of any nature from others; no matter what type of material we will have a publication to print it."..."I confess to being uninterested in the gravest problems of mankind, even while admitting that those problems are more important than those that concern me." Sure. If everyone gave all his attention to those gravest problems, there'd be so many politicians, economist, and semanticist, psychologists, et al that you couldn't breathe--then what would we do for cehmists & engineers, let alone farmers and stevedores? & what would we do without them? Joe's Jottings: No comment. Tumbrils: I still don't see what's wrong with dishing up occasional out-of-context from Spengler. I'd do it myself if I'd read him....The John MacDougal quote was extremely tantalizing. You go merrily along, taking every other word, thinking you're making sense out of it; & then even that works stopping. Is there any decipher to way is?.."Worksheet For a Better World" failed to communicate to me any impression except vague despair. FanTods: Even if I weren't already sure that there's much good in Vanguard, I could convince myself by noting Norm's reaction; his reviews of Vanguard are fully as good as his FAPA ditto & Norm is nice people...."One suspects that the plot/of "World of A/would need but minor changes to permit the substitution of, say, Yoga, for General Semantics therein." Note vV's confession in Vanguard Variorum that "World of A"'s plot antedated its semantic slant. Perculiar, You'd think that in a storu about non-Aristotelianism the philosophy would have to be the most important feature, & determine the story's nature. Yet with vV, apparently, the frivolities come forst. It's like our annual Easter parades. You'd think that if Mlle Susie Brown was really religious then Easter would be immeasurably more important to her as the anniversary of the Resurrection than as an occasion to don new bonnets. But, to Susie as to our boy AE, 'taint so. Frivolities come first. Constitution: Haven't read it. Why should I? I'm at the tyrant's mercy anyway, & fan constitutions bore me. Cretin: Add male cooks: Ted Sturgeon not only chefs with enjoyment tobasco, & excellent results, but cleans up afterward!...Add Children's Bright Sayings: As we drive thru southern Connecticut, my mother says to my five-yr-old sister, "Look, Terry, you can see the Sound." Terry: WHAT?"...
