COPY STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA [emblem] July 11, 1963 College of Law To: Human Rights Committee From: Willard L. Boyd I am writing to apprise you of the Human Rights developments during this summer. They are as follows: (A) Housing. On Friday, July 5, Mr. Johnson and I met with Mr, Rhatigan and Dean McCarrel concerning the visitation to the old approved housing holders. A half-time employee will be hired by the Office of Student Affairs in the near future to assist Mr. Rhatigan in off-campus housing. Together these two men will be responsible for the visitations, although, of course, they have other responsibilities. On Wednesday, July 24, at 3:00 P. M. there will be a meeting of the approved housing holders at the City Council chambers to discuss with them the University's policy on off-campus housing. If any of the members of the Committee are in Iowa City, it would be very much appreciated if they could attend this meeting, although it will be conducted by the Office of Student Affairs. (B) Student Organizations. On Thursday, July 18, Messers Johnson, Nusser, Boyd and Bennett will meet with members of the Committee on Student Organizations of the Committee on Student Life to discuss the fraternity and sorority problem. (C) On Wednesday, July 10, Messers Michaelson, Lloyd-Jones and Boyd met with the Iowa City Ministerial Association at the request of that organization. The Association has voted to request a hearing for the City Council as soon as feasible to present a proposal to create an Iowa City Human Relations Commission. At the time of the meeting with the City Council, it was hoped that all members of the Clergy and prominent lay-men of their congregations will be present. It would be help-ful if any members of our Committee could contact their clergy-men for the purpose of urgng that every support be given to this proposal.
