STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA [emblem] March 13, 1963 Dean of Students VIA CAMPUS MAIL Professor Willard L. Boyd, Chairman University Committee on Human Rights College of Law 234 Law Building Re: Report of the Sub-Committee on Student Organizations of the Committee on Student Life. Dear Professor Boyd: With reference to your letter of February 25, let me reiterate to you in writing, as I have done on several occasions orally, the desire of our Sub-Committee to work closely and constructively with the Committee on Human Rights in the attainment of what, I'm sure, we feel our mutually established objectives in the area of human rights. I regret that I had to forego meeting with your Committee on Tuesday evening, but perhaps this letter may serve to communicate a little information about the background of the Sub-Committee which I head and what we have done to date. As you are already aware, on May 11, 1962, the Committee on Student Life adopted the following provisions for incorporation into the CODE OF STUDENT LIFE, as affecting existing student organizations officially approved by the University: "IV. Existing Organizations A. Membership Policy. It is the policy of the University that local student organizations be able to exercise free choice of members on the basis of their merits as individuals without restrictions as to race, color, or national origin. Any such organization unable to exercise such free choice as of October 1, 1965, will have its Certificate of Recognition revoked by the Committee on Student Life. B. ... 5. Have on file a copy of its constitution, bylaws, and other documents or reports that pertain to membership regulations. (In case an organization has no written constitution and bylaws, a statement setting forth its purposes, basis of membership, fees and dues charged, and other such data as may be deemed pertinent by the Office of Student Affairs will be accepted as satisfying this requirement.) Additional relevant information will be provided when requested by the Committee on Student Life."
