Professor Willard L. Boyd - 2 - March 13, 1963 At the meeting of the Committee on Student Life on June 6, 1962, an ad hoc committee composed of Dr. Paul Huston, Mark Schantz, and the writer as chairman, was appointed to report recommended policies and procedures for implementing the membership policy established by the Committee on Student Life on May 11, 1962. At the meeting of the Committee on Student Life on October 17, 1962, this ad hoc committee presented its report, recommending the following schedule for the purpose of implementing the provisions as adopted for printing in the CODE OF STUDENT LIFE: "I. Notifications All approved student organizations at the University of Iowa shall be notified by the Office of Student Affairs as early as possible of the recently established deadline date of October 1, 1965, by which time it is expected by the University that existing student organizations shall be able to exercise free choice of members on the basis of their merits as individuals, without restrictions as to race, color, or national origin, and that any such organization unable to exercise such a choice as of October 1, 1965, will have its Certificate of Recognition revoked by the Committee on Student Life. Similarly, letters of notification shall be sent to the national offices of those organizations which have local chapters on the University of Iowa campus. Such letters of notification shall be conciliatory in spirit and emphasize the desire of the Committee and the University to cooperate, counsel, and work in conjunction with both national and local organizations in the achievement of the University goals. The communications shall further advise that no action recommended by the University as set forth in the letters shall in any way abridge the freedom of the local organization to select individual members on their individual merits. "II. Reports of Progress Any student organization whose national or local constitution or bylaws contains any discriminatory provision relating to race, color, or national origin, shall be asked to report to the Committee on Student Life, during January of each year prior to 1965, the progress made by the organization in having any or all of the offending provisions removed. Such a report should contain the following information, as well as whatever other information the Committee deems pertinent:
