STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA [emblem] Office of Student Affairs Dear As an officer of a national organization having a local affiliate at the University of Iowa, you will undoubtedly be interested in the University's current membership policy governing all student organizations on campus. Although your own organization may not be affected in any way by this policy, we feel an obligation to let you know of its provisions and to solicit your understanding of the University's objective in eventually realizing on our campus a social climate which is free from bias and prejudice in the area of human relations. On May 11, 1962, the University Committee on Student Life, composed of fourteen faculty and student members, adopted the following provisions for incorporation into the CODE OF STUDENT LIFE as affecting existing student organizations officially approved by the University; these provisions are now the official policy of the University: IV. Existing Organizations A. Membership Policy. It is the policy of the university that local student organizations be able to exercise free choice of members on the basis of their merits as individuals without restrictions as to race, color, or national origin. Any such organization unable to exercise such free choice as of October 1, 1965, will have its Certificate of Recognition revoked by the Committee on Student Life. B..... 5. Have on file a copy of its constitution, bylaws, and other documents or reports that pertain to membership regulations. (in case an organization has no written constitution and bylaws, a statement setting forth its purposes, basis of membership, fees and dues charged, and other such data as may be deemed pertinent by the Office of Student Affairs will be accepted as satisfying this requirement.) Additional relevant information will be provided when requested by the Committee on Student Life.
