COPY STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA [emblem] College of Law July 17, 1963 Honorable Harold Hughes Governor of the State of Iowa State Capitol Des Moines, Iowa Dear Governor Hughes: I was very pleased to read your recent statement concerning discrimination in the July 13, 1963, edition of the Iowa City Press-Citizen. As an interested citizen of this state, I wish to express my appreciation to you for your forthright stand on discrimination and your decision to appoint a Human Rights Commission for the State of Iowa. On February 21, 1965. a Committee on Human Rights for the University of Iowa was created by President Virgil M. Hancher. The purpose of this Committee is to deal primarily with problems of discrimination as they affect the students and staff of the University in the Iowa City community. The Committee, however, is also directed to work on request with interested groups on the campus and similar groups in the city and state. For this reason, I am writing to offer you the services and facilities of the University in any way which will further human rights in Iowa. The University currently is engaged in some activities which might be of interest to you and the future members of the Commission. In the fall, the Institute of Public Affairs expects to publish a pamphlet on the legal aspects of civil rights in Iowa. This pamphlet will deal with state and municipal statutes, ordinances, cases, and Attorney-General's Opinions as well as the activities of human rights commissions in Iowa. In addition, the University library is developing a human rights file which contains materials from national, state and local public and private organizations working in the field. This special library collection already is proving worthwhile in dealing with a number of human rights problems. Professor Leslie Moeller of the School of Journalism has indicated that it would be possible for that School to include sessions on the handling of human relations news in short courses held for news editors on this campus.
