Activities are a "must" at SUI to meet new friends who share common interests. They broaden your college experience. By attending the Activities Open House Wednesday afternoon, September 18, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union, you will meet representatives of every campus organization who will explain their group's purposes and activities through pamphets, discussions, and gay booth displays. Many of them will be eager to accept you as a member. Now it's time to run back to the dorm and eat before going to Recreation Night, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Field House. Recreation Night is for your enjoyment and participation. Attire is sports attire, with a swimming suit along if you wish to swim. You'll also be able to play basketball or volleyball; or if you wish, just be a spectator. Demonstrations will be given in fencing, wrestling, or swimming. Don't forget to wander up to the North Gym where you will have another opportunity to get acquainted with other freshmen and transfer students at a dance held in your honor. Classes start Thursday, September 19, at 7:30 a.m. with classes dismissed for the induction ceremony at 9:25 a.m. at Old Capitol. This is one of SUI's oldest and most impressive traditions, and it is one ceremony you won't want to miss! Just listen for SUI's marching band and its stirring notes to lead you to the scene. To wind up an exciting and fun-packed Orientation Week, the Union Open House on Friday evening includes dancing and tours given by the Union Board members. As time goes on you'll be spending many hours at the Union so make the most of this excellent opportunity. During the week your questions about classes, activities, etc., can be answered at the information booth set up in the Pentacrest, staffed by upperclassmen. Right now your questions can be answered by your Orientation leader. Write her a note, she'd love to hear from you and answer your questions. If you haven't heard from her yet, you'll be getting a letter soon. She is selected on the basis of her interest and ability in helping new students. She is eagerly waiting to meet you. This week is your week. Through its activities you can build a firm foundation for your future experiences at SUI. Use this basic training to expand your horizons. 11
