Distinguished Service Awards {Drawing of bust of woman wearing a mortar board in upper right corner of page} Outstanding scholarship is coveted and recognized at SUI by numerous honorary societies. Having won at the battle of wits, you will receive a distinguished service award by admission to membership. As a freshman, you may receive recognition with an invitation to join Alpha Lambda Delta, a freshman women's honorary, which confers membership on those attaining a 3.5 grade average or better. (SUI grades on a 4-point scale, which means you'll receive 4 points for every hour of "A", 3 for every hour of "B," etc.) Upon reaching the second semester of your junior year, you may be tapped for Mortar Board, a national society for outstanding leadership displayed in senior women. Membership is a recognition of above average academic ability plus leadership and service qualities shown throughout your college career. From five to twenty-five junior women are selected by the chapter and tapped at the annual Leadership Banquet. Mortar Board members in their white blazers, a symbol of distinction, sponsor the annual Smarty Party which recognizes coeds with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better for the previous semester. The ultimate goal of second-semester senior women is to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa. This honorary initiates liberal arts students who rank in the top 10 percent of their class. The Phi Beta Kappa key is a prized possession of the men and women who belong to this old and honored organization. Most departments and major fields at SUI recognize achievement beyond the call of duty. As an undergraduate woman, you may be asked to participate in: Beta Gamma Sigma-commerce Eta Sigman Phi-classical languages Kappa Epsilon-pharmacy Omicron Nu-home economics Pi Lambda Theta-education Phi Delta Phi-German Phi Gamma Nu-social science Phi Lambda Upsilon and Iota Sigma Phi-chemistry Purple Mask-dramatic arts Sigma Alpha Eta-speech pathology Sigma Delta Pi-spanish Sigma Theta Tau-nursing Sigma Xi-seniors in science Theta Sigma Phi-journalism Zeta Phi Eta-speech 14
