On Leave There is no place like a university, where cultural opportunities abound and are usually presented free or at minimum cost. "On leave" from your studies, you are able to broaden your appreciation of the fine arts. Never again will you have such an opportunity! At the Union last year, big names like Peter, Paul, and Mary, and the Roger Wagner Chorale, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra performed for SUI students. SUI has an active dramatic arts program. Plays, such as "Long Day's Journey Into Night," by Eugene O'Neill, are presented through the modern facilities of the University Theatre. You may wish to attend the Studio Theatre, where plays written by students are often staged on Friday afternoons. The music department at SUI presents many concerts throughout the year. These are given by the symphony orchestra, band , choir, oratorio chorus, Old Gold Singers, percussion ensemble, and are scheduled at the Union. Recitals and small ensembles will also entertain you with hours of musical pleasure. Last year Charles Treger, from SUI's teaching staff, returned victoriously from Poland where he won the Wieniawski Competition Award and presented a special concert to the student body. The University Lecture Series and the various departments at Iowa bring noted lecturers, speakers, and national figures to the campus to present their views. These are enlightening and well worth your time. Art exhibits are always available at SUI. Union Board sponsors many exhibits such as the art student of the month, photographic displays, and national traveling exhibits. The State Historical Society Building offers exhibits of Iowa history and folklore. And sometime when you are in Macbride Hall, wander up to the second and third floors to the natural history museums. These rewarding experiences are yours for the taking. Make the most of your college years by opening up the worlds of art, drama, and music; your life will become richer with feeling and new awareness.
