Cultural Opportunities... ...abound on the SUI campus and when you're looking for a change of pace and atmosphere, away from the routine of "booking" and attending extracurricular meetings, what better way is there to fill your free hours than by attending the many exhibits, lectures, concerts, and plays that SUI offers? In the past several years, SUI's cultural atmosphere has attracted such big names as "The Limelighters," "Peter, Paul, and Mary," The Roger Wagner Chorale, the Minneapolis Symphony, and the "Smothers Brothers." SUI has long been noted for its fine dramatic arts program. Those unable to participate directly in its work are fortunate in being able to observe its accomplishments when plays are presented through the modern facilities of the University Theatre. Just in the past year, outstanding productions of Hamlet by Shakespeare, Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, and A Thurber Carnival by James Thurber attracted many students to a night at the theatre. You may also attend the Studio Theatre, where plays written by students are often staged on Friday afternoons. Your appreciation of fine music will grow with the events scheduled by SUI's music department. The concerts, usually held in the Union, are given by the symphony orchestra, band, choir, oratorio chorus, Old Gold Singers, and the percussion ensemble. Recitals and small ensembles will also entertain you with hours of musical pleasure. Two years ago, Charles Treger, from SUI's teaching staff, returned victoriously from Poland where he won the Wieniawski Competition Award, and presented a special concert to the student body. You'll hear celebrities from the national and international scene speak at least once a month in conjunction with the University Lecture Series. Art exhibits will await your glance regularly at the Union, University Library, and Art Building. These rewarding experiences are yours for the taking-most are free or at minimum cost! Make the most of your college years by opening up the world of art, drama, and music-YOU will become richer with new appreciation and awareness. {Drawing of doll-like girl will opera glasses, lower right corner of page}
