Take a Bow An outstanding performance seldom goes unrecognized at the U of I. Good scholarship is coveted and rewarded by numerous honorary societies, which encourage the coed in her efforts toward the goal of higher education. If you follow the rules of good study and class attendance, you may be among those honored. As a freshman, you may receive recognition with an invitation to join Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman women's honorary, which confers membership on those attaining a 3.5 grade-point average or better. (Iowa grades on a 4-point scale, which means you'll receive 4 points for ever hour of "A," 3 points for every hour of "B," 2 for every hour of "C," 1 for every hour of "D," and 0 for every hour of "F.") Leadership and service to the University, plus good scholarship, may make you a candidate for Mortar Board, national honor society for senior women. Being tapped for Mortar Board could be the climax of your junior year, when from five to twenty-five women are chosen by the outgoing chapter to carry on the Mortar Board tradition. Membership is both an honor and a responsibility, since Mortar Board sponsors several projects such as the Graduate Study Day and the "Smarty Party," which recognizes coeds with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better for the first semester. A Mortar Board white blazer is a symbol of an outstanding woman on the U of I campus. The ultimate goal of second-semester senior women is to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa. This honorary initiates liberal arts students who rank in the top 10 per cent of their class. The Phi Beta Kappa key is a prized possession of the men and women who belong to this old and honored organization. 24
