These essential factors will determine the success and safety of your traveling. A standard safety feature for your college life is studying. And to help you get your safety belt fastened and start you on your way, you will have a faculty adviser. He will be your guide and source of information throughout your college career, and especially during the first few weeks of your journey. He will help you clear up confusing terms and requirements and advise you on the way to get the most from your four years at Iowa. A good start requires a definite program plus plenty of application. A total of thirty to thirty-five hours is usually suggested as the amount of time you should spend studying each week, assuming that you are carrying the normal freshman load of fourteen to sixteen credit hours per semester. This implies that you will spend about two hours in preparation for each hour of class. These hours will probably be filled with core requirements such as mathematics, Rhetoric, natural and social sciences, literature, foreign language, and historical and cultural courses. 12
