.those of professional companies, for Iowa is considered to have one of the finest dramatic arts departments in the country. The selection of plays ranges from classical theatre to modern productions. This year the productions included Hedda Gabler, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? If you enjoy the theatre you will want to sample the Studio Theatre as well, where original plays written by students are often staged. The Friday afternoon Studio Matinee offers less elaborate performances weekly. Popular entertainment is presented too, by such big names as Ferrante and Teicher, and the "Moonrakers." The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and other concert groups perform often. Your appreciation of fine music will grow with the events scheduled by the U of I's music department. Concerts, usually held in the Union, are given by the symphony orchestra, band, choir, oratorio chorus, Old Gold Singers, and the percussion ensemble. Recitals and small ensembles will also entertain you with hours of musical pleasure. Celebrities from the national and international scene speak at least once a month in conjunction with the University Lecture Series. Union Board sponsors many lectures and poetry readings. Art exhibits are presented regularly in the Union, the University Library, and the Art Building. These experiences are available to you free or at minimal cost. Make the most of your college years by opening the world of art, drama, and music at Iowa, and you will discover new appreciation and awareness. Just as the shock absorbers help a car over unexpected bumps and ruts, your spiritual life can help you over the jolts and occasional trying times that are a part of every person's life. As you widen your scope of knowledge, remember your spiritual growth, too. College presents new and different situations and ideas, and you will frequently need guidance in thinking things out. Remember that the beliefs and traditions from your family worship are not to be left at home, but strengthened by college life. Iowa City churches will welcome you to their services and their choirs. Most churches have college groups which offer both social and religious activities. These groups hold open house during Orientation Week, when you can meet the group you are interested in. The churches work through their college center to get to know you. The student religious groups available at the U of I include: Canterbury Club (Episcopal), Christian Science Society, Disciples Student Fellowship (Christian), Friends Meeting (Quaker), Gamma Delta (Lutheran, Missouri Synod), Hillel Foundation (Jewish Student Center), Iowa Christian Fellowship (interdenominational), Kappa Phi (Methodist sorority), Latter Day Saints, Newman Club (Catholic), Roger Williams Fellowship (Baptist), United States Fellowship (Congregational and Evangelical Reformed), Wesley Foundation (Methodist), and Westminster Fellowship (Presbyterian). Participation in a religious group will lend a deeper meaning to your other activities and provide still another way for you to attain your personal goals at the U of I, for you can't steer straight without adequate confidence and excellent guidance. 15
