FRESHMAN COUNCIL AWS gives you, the freshman coed, a speaking part in its large organization through the Freshman Council. This is composed of approximately twenty-two members, who are chosen in all-dorm elections, and keeps the freshman women on campus in contact with the active body of AWS. Last year the Council members helped with monthly publicity of AWS general events and sent out a calendar of important activities. During Mother's Day Weekend, the council holds a tea in honor of all the mothers of AWS General Council and Freshman Council members. The main purpose of Freshman Council is to promote special interest and enthusiasm in leadership and activities in hopes that its members will provide future leadership for AWS and other University organizations. CENTRAL JUDICIARY University life brings new rules and regulations to be followed concerning hours and conduct. These principles are outlined for you in the Blue Book and in the Code of Student Life which you will find in your residence hall room upon arrival. The Central Judiciary Board, whose chairman is a member of the AWS General Council, helps formulate and administer these policies. Its membership includes representatives from the women's housing units. STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE This committee was formed with the belief that freshman and transfer students need not only the opportunity to talk with faculty advisers, but also with qualified, interested students, who can help answer questions concerning their academic program and related questions on the University. This committee works with general liberal arts advisers on the day before registration helping to register freshman and transfer students. Committee members also work at registration in the Field House, helping students with conflicts and giving general information. This is the newest project of AWS and a very interesting and exciting one. If you enjoy working with people and are willing to work hard, this is the committee for you! FOREIGN STUDENT COMMITTEE This committee works in association with the International Center in the presentation of dinners of various countries represented at the U of I. A different international group is chosen each month to prepare and serve food typical of their own country. the AWS committee members play and integral part in planning, shopping, and all other facets of preparation. The dinners are held in the International Center where American and foreign students can exchange ideas and customs. The AWS committee is important in showing the students of other countries that Americans can share in the work and success of projects in which they are interested. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL The International Festival, sponsored jointly by AWS and the International Center, gives you the foreign students on this campus an opportunity to share a portion of their cultures in an evening featuring a stage presentation, centered around a different theme each year. Last year's theme was, "Where on Earth is the World?" Working together in preparation for the Festival, foreign and 19
