{Drawing of Phi Beta Kappa key} High Mileage An outstanding performance seldom goes unrecognized at the U of I. Good scholarship is coveted and rewarded by numerous honorary societies, which encourage the coed in her efforts toward the goal of higher education. Good work in your freshman year and continued high scholarship are necessary if you are to join these groups, either later this year or as an upperclassman. As a freshman, you may receive an invitation to join Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman women's honorary, which confers membership on those attaining a 3.5 grade-point average or better (Iowa grades on a 4-point scale, which means you'll receive 4 points for every hour of "A," 3 points for every hour of "B," 2 for every hour of "C," 1 for every hour of "D," and 0 for every hour of "F"). Leadership and service to the University, plus good scholarship, may make you a candidate for Mortar Board, national honorary society for senior women. Being tapped for Mortar Board could be the climax of your junior year, when from five to twenty-five junior women are chosen by the outgoing chapter to carry on the Mortar Board tradition. Membership is both an honor and a responsibility, since Mortar Board sponsors several projects such as the Graduate Study day and the "Smarty Party," which recognizes coeds with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better for the first semester. A Mortar Board white blazer is a symbol of an outstanding woman on the U of I campus. The ultimate goal of second-semester senior women is to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest of the academic honoraries. It initiates liberal arts students who rank in the top 10 per cent of their class. The Phi Beta Kappa key is a prized possession of men and women the world over, and it is a truly deserved recognition for those who have set and maintained such high scholastic goals. Most departments and major fields at the U of I reward achievement and outstanding work among the undergraduate women with membership in honorary groups of the following areas: Chemistry-Phi Lambda Upsilon and Iota Sigma Phi Classical Languages-Eta Sigma Phi Commerce-Beta Gamma Sigma Dramatic Arts-Purple Mask Education-Pi Lambda Theta German-Phi Delta Phi Home Economics-Omicron Nu Journalism-Theta Sigma Phi Nursing-Sigma Theta Tau Pharmacy-Kappa Epsilon Science Seniors-Sigma Xi Social Science-Phi Gamma Nu Spanish-Sigma Delta Pi Speech-Zeta Phi Eta Speech Pathology-Sigma Alpha Eta 22
